We all know the fact that the MCSU election was conducted with huge student participation (nearly 80%) under live video surveillance and an expert panel conducting the process, questions were still being raised on the recognition of this body.
Today all these questions have been settled and it has been officiated that the elected student body formed by the students along with it’s recognition among the students, has successfully pressurised the College Authority to recognise this body and officially accept that this Students’ Union will hold all the rights as held by previous Student Unions of Medical College Kolkata, “as enshrined in the Medical College Students’ Union Constitution”.
It must be reiterated that a Students’ Council as prescribed by NMC takes away the right of students actual representation as representatives are ‘nominated’ by the College Authority which will always be suitable to the ruling party.
In this regard, it is again seen that the College Authority was compelled by the students to recognise this as a body with all powers of the Previous Union with no nominations and complete acceptance of the mandate of students election.
We would like to congratulate all the students of MCK and the democratic minded people who came in support of this fight for campus democracy because only this struggle could and has achieved the formation of a Students’ Union in the current undemocratic space of Bengal. The victory of this students’ movement with this new model shows a way forward for the fight for campus democracy alongwith the rights of students and patients.
MCSU bearing the weight of the history of its formation condemns the authority controlled representative model being practised in other colleges wherein the power of the students is arrested and seized by the College Authority ie. the ruling party.
We stand in support of the fight waged by students in all campuses to reclaim their democratic rights.
