An Appeal for Support

As of October 30, the Government of Manipur’s Directorate of Relief and Rehabilitation reported that over 57,000 individuals remain without homes due to the ethnic conflict that erupted in May of this year. These internally displaced people are spread across 334 camps in 14 districts of the state.

Shramajibi Swasthy Udyog and West Bengal Doctors Forum used the funds initially raised for Amphan relief to provide medical relief to people living in camps in Manipur. They have sent over INR 8 lakh worth of medicines and menstrual hygiene products like sanitary napkins to Manipur between mid-June and the first week of November. This relief effort covers both the valley and hilly regions of Manipur, and multiple organizations are involved in distributing the relief materials. The organizations that have helped so far include MitSna, the Manipur branch of the Indian Red Cross Society, Dr. Pratita Charitable Trust, women’s organization Macha Leima, Youth Welfare Front, Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum, Fund for the Hills, Northeast Society of College of Vocational Studies (CVS) & Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Northeast collective Ashoka and the North East Students Society of Delhi University.

With winter almost here, the displaced families in the camps are in urgent need of warm clothing. With more than a thousand houses having burnt and as many of them had to leave behind their belongings to escape danger, making the need for winter clothing even more pressing. Wangkheirakpam Devraj, who is responsible for coordinating medical relief efforts with various organizations, has taken the lead in organizing a campaign to collect winter clothing. Some progress has already been made in this regard. Swasthya Siksha Nirman, a fraternal organization of Shramajibi Swasthya Udyog, is fundraising to collect or buy winter clothing and blankets for those in need, and sending them to the people affected.

On average, each refugee camp houses around 350 people. Even if we cannot cover all 334 camps, any help would be appreciated. In Imphal’s markets, a double-layered blanket costs between 600-700 Rupees. It would be beneficial if each donor could sponsor a single blanket.
