1) The appointment case of Dr Aniket Mahato:
In the case concerning the appointment of Dr Aniket Mahato, the Calcutta High Court had clearly directed the State Health Department to appoint him to RG Kar Medical College as per the declared merit list. This order was delivered by the Division Bench on 6 November. Instead of complying, the Health Department stalled the process through repeated delays and excuses.
Based on this continued violation, we filed a contempt petition today. While filing the case, we were stunned to learn that the State Government, already reprimanded by both the Single Bench and the Division Bench for corruption in medical recruitment, has still not stepped back. Using public money, the State has now moved the Supreme Court in an attempt to validate its corruption and brace itself for yet another legal blow from the highest court. We are preparing for this legal fight as well.
2) The cases related to the Justice for Abhaya movement:
Through our lawyers, we came to know that Hare Street Police Station and Bowbazar Police Station have filed a total of 19 charge sheets in the Bankshall Court against various protest programmes held during last year’s agitation and hunger strike demanding justice for Abhaya.
When we went to collect the charge sheets today, we discovered that many protesting doctors and medical students, who are currently working or training in government hospitals, have been labelled as “absconded.” As expected, the court granted them bail immediately. On legal advice, we have now decided to approach the High Court to seek quashing of all these cases.
Our legal battle is ongoing, and we know very clearly that the real purpose of these cases is to harass, discredit and intimidate those who protested against injustice. The administration wants to send a message to the healthcare community and to society at large about how dissent will be punished.
The courtroom fight will continue, but we know that only the struggle on the streets and among the people can end this entrenched misrule. That struggle will continue and we will fight till our last breath to secure justice.
