Abhaya Mancha Condemns Gangrape of Medical Student in Durgapur; Demands Judicial Enquiry and Campus Safety Reforms
Abhaya Mancha expresses its deepest outrage and sorrow over the horrific gangrape of a second-year medical student from IQ City Medical College, Durgapur. The survivor, who had stepped out of campus around 8 PM for a routine errand, was allegedly abducted and assaulted in a brutal act that has shaken the conscience of the state.
This incident is not isolated—it is a grim reminder of the deteriorating safety conditions for women in West Bengal, both on and off educational campuses. The administration’s response, marked by archaic victim-blaming narratives and attempts to restrict women’s mobility, only emboldens perpetrators and perpetuates a culture of impunity.
On October 12, a delegation from Abhaya Mancha visited Durgapur to stand in solidarity with the survivor and demand accountability. However, in a deeply disturbing turn of events, the victim’s father was forcibly taken away by unidentified individuals allegedly acting in collusion with local police. This act of intimidation and obstruction is not only condemnable—it signals a deliberate attempt to suppress truth and shield the guilty.
We demand immediate and uncompromising action:
1. Judicial Enquiry: A Supreme Court-monitored judicial enquiry must be initiated to ensure transparency and justice.
2. Special Investigation Team (SIT): A neutral and competent SIT must be formed to investigate the incident thoroughly and impartially.
3. Campus Safety Overhaul: The state must implement robust safety protocols across all college campuses, including IQ City Medical College, with clear accountability mechanisms.
4. End Victim-Blaming: All statements and policies that restrict women’s freedom or shift blame onto survivors must be withdrawn immediately. Women’s autonomy and dignity are non-negotiable.
