We express our deep concern and unequivocal condemnation of the ongoing harassment and intimidation of a UK-based modern medicine practitioner by the West Bengal Medical Council and state police authorities. This doctor—an esteemed professional practicing in England—has been targeted solely for exercising his democratic right to voice opposition against systemic injustice and misinformation propagated by the Government of West Bengal.
His vocal support for the ‘Abhaya Movement’, which emerged following the horrific incident at RG Kar Medical College on 9th August 2024, has been met with punitive retaliation. Rather than acknowledging the gravity of the crime and addressing public concern, the authorities have chosen to persecute a member of the global medical fraternity who stood in solidarity with calls for accountability.
Such state-sponsored intimidation not only undermines the dignity of our democratic institutions but also reflects an alarming intolerance to dissent. The use of regulatory bodies and law enforcement to silence critical voices sets a dangerous precedent—one that threatens the very fabric of civil liberties and ethical governance.
We stand in solidarity with all individuals—regardless of their geography—who raise their voice against injustice. No authority should have the mandate to crush conscience under the weight of bureaucracy and fear.
We demand an immediate end to this harassment, a transparent inquiry into the abuses of power, and the restoration of justice for the events that triggered the Abhaya Movement.
Democracy thrives not through silence, but through the courage to speak.
