West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF)

Stand in Solidarity with Dr Randall Sequeira: Defend the Right to Serve and Resist
West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front expresses its solidarity with Dr Randall Sequeira, a people’s doctor who has dedicated years to providing healthcare to Adivasi communities in the remote hills of Kalahandi and Rayagada, Odisha. He was arrested in Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi, on the night of 16 October 2026 and is currently lodged in Rayagada Sub-Jail, facing serious criminal charges.
Dr Sequeira’s work has taken him to communities often deprived of access to basic healthcare. His commitment to serving people in remote and marginalised regions represents a vision of medicine grounded in solidarity, dignity and social responsibility. His arrest, therefore, raises concerns that extend beyond the fate of one individual.
The arrest comes amid growing repression against Adivasi communities resisting bauxite mining projects in the Sijimali and Kutrumali hills of Odisha. For the people who inhabit these hills, the struggle concerns their ancestral land, forests, water sources, livelihoods and the right to shape their own future. Allegations of coercion in obtaining Gram Sabha consent have further raised serious questions about whether the voices and rights of local communities are being respected.
When communities raise legitimate concerns about projects that threaten their lives and livelihoods, the response must be dialogue and accountability, not intimidation and the criminalisation of dissent. The arrest of a doctor who has spent years serving these communities makes this situation particularly disturbing.
Healthcare cannot be separated from the social realities in which people live. Nor can the commitment to serve marginalised communities be divorced from their right to live with dignity, security and democratic freedom.
WBJDF calls for the immediate release of Dr Randall Sequeira, a fair and transparent legal process, and an end to the repression of Adivasi communities resisting mining projects in Odisha.
We appeal to healthcare professionals, medical students, democratic organisations, civil liberties groups and concerned citizens to raise their voices in solidarity.
Standing with Dr Randall Sequeira is a stand for the right to serve, the right to dissent, and the rights of communities to defend their land and lives.
In solidarity,
West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front
