Joint Platform of Doctors and BOGS condemns the spate of violence against health care providers in this state of ours. The menace has reached alarming proportion with more than 250 incidents of violence. Recent attack on one of our colleague in CMRI is a continuation of the trend.
This was once a state that was known as Mecca of medicine. Now its known for one of the highest incidents of violence against doctors in the country. Not surprising that not a single perpetrator of violence has been arrested inspite of obvious evidence. The apathy of the police and the state government gives impetus to the continuing violence.
Violence in any form is condemned by us. Our law and the state provides enough avenues of complaints against erring doctors without the need to partake in violence. Confidence in health care is a two way street. We as a responsible society will do everything to regain our patient’s confidence. But if we are not respected or made to work under threat then unfortunately this state will end up losing its valuable medical core.
We urge our law keepers to protect us and provide a conductive environment for safe practices. Failure to bring the culprits to justice will clearly act as a deterrent to our existence. The administration, law keepers, judiciary and other stake holders need to act and act fast and decisively.
In the meeting held today, 27.02.2020 evening by the brotherly Doctors Organization and BOGS the following decisions has been taken:
- We unconditionally and unequivocally condemn the continuous spate of violence unleashed upon the medical fraternity, specially in the State of West Bengal. We deplore the lack of sensitivity and inaction of law enforcers.
• The Doctors Organizations will officially appeal to the Chief Justice, High court, Kolkata to expedioustly pursue the PIL, W.p. no. 1487 (w) of 2018, filed by WBDF against violence in healthcare. - The Doctors Organizations will seek hearing of the Governor, West Bengal and the Chief Minister, West Bengal.
As stated by the officials of Alipore P.S. if the charge sheet is not duly submitted in the court against the person who assaulted Dr. Basab Mukherjee, we will be left with no other alternative but to choose any form of protest which may be doom spelling. The State Administration will be responsible for any untoward event that may arise thereof.
