The 21 day lockdown announced by the government in response to the Covid-19 crisis has caused immense hardship to migrant workers in the country. There have been many reports of police mercilessly beating up, firing tear gas on, spraying chemical disinfectant and arresting those migrant workers who were walking long distances to return to their homes in the face of sudden loss of income. In one week of lockdown over 22 migrant workers died due to the strain of the long journey back home on foot. The government has failed to provide a basic wage, food or shelter in current crisis to the lakhs of Indians who depend on daily wages to make ends meet. The supreme court has also refused to intervene in this matter.
