এরপরই রোগিনীর আত্মীয়স্বজনসহ প্রায় ১০–১২ জন স্থানীয় লোক ওয়ার্ডের ভেতর ঢুকে পড়ে এবং ডিউটিতে থাকা মহিলা গাইনী চিকিৎসকের উপর চড়াও হয়। তাদের মধ্যে কয়েকজন নিজেদের “পুলিশের বড় অফিসার” এবং “এলাকার বড় নেতা” বলে পরিচয় দেয়। চিকিৎসকের হাত মুচড়ে দেওয়া হয়, ঘাড়ে থাপ্পড় মারা হয়, এবং সেই সময়ই তাদের মুখে শোনা যায়, “আপনার মুখ চলবে, আমাদের রড চলবে – সেই রড কোথায় কোথায় ঢোকাতে হয় দেখে নেব”, “জ্যান্ত ফিরতে পারবেন না” এই হল হুমকির ভাষা।

হাসপাতালের নিরাপত্তার দায়িত্বে থাকা গার্ডরাও স্থানীয় বাসিন্দা হওয়ায় বাধা দিতে পারেননি। ( বা দেন নি)

ওয়েস্ট বেঙ্গল জুনিয়র ডক্টরস ফ্রন্ট সবরকমভাবে নিগৃহীত চিকিৎসকের পাশে আছে। চিকিৎসক ও তাঁর স্বামী ইতিমধ্যেই থানায় গিয়ে এফআইআর দায়ের করেছেন। সেই ভিত্তিতে দুইজনকে গ্রেফতার করা হয়েছে। তার মধ্যে একজন ট্রাফিক পুলিশের হোমগার্ড এবং শাসক দলের স্থানীয় নেতা। বাকিদের এখনও “খুঁজে পাওয়া যায়নি”। এখনও পর্যন্ত কোনো ইনস্টিটিউশনাল এফআইআর হয়নি। আজ আমাদের প্রতিনিধি দল ইতিমধ্যে ঘটনাস্থলে পৌঁছে হাসপাতালের চিকিৎসক দের সাথে দেখা করেছে, কর্তৃপক্ষ কে ইনস্টিটিউশনাল এফআইআর করার জন্যে ডেপুটেশন দেওয়া হয়েছে ( আপডেট: করা হয়েছে হাসপাতাল কর্তৃপক্ষের তরফে), পুলিশ প্রশাসনকে ডেপুটেশন দেওয়া হয়েছে, তার সাথে নিগৃহীতা চিকিৎসক এর সংহতিতে পাশে থাকার স্পষ্ট বার্তা আমরা দিচ্ছি।

রাজ্যের প্রায় প্রতিটি হাসপাতালে শাসক দলের ছত্রছায়ায় এমন ভয়ঙ্কর পরিবেশ তৈরি হয়েছে। এরকম একটা অংশ তৈরি হয়েছে যারা নিজেকে ‘বড় নেতা’ ভাবে এবং মনে করে যা খুশি করা যায়, কোনও জবাবদিহি করতে হবে না রাজনৈতিক পরিচয়ের কারণে। আমরা এর আগেও বহুবার দেখেছি, দ্রুত গ্রেফতার দেখিয়ে পরে জামিনে ছেড়ে দেওয়ার প্রহসন। আমরা আশঙ্কায় আছি এখানেও তার পুনরাবৃত্তি হবে কিনা।

আমরা নিগৃহীতা চিকিৎসকের পাশে আছি আইনিভাবে। তাকে মানসিক ভাবে ধাক্কা সামলে উঠতে দেওয়া এই মুহূর্তে আমাদের মূল চিন্তার জায়গা। পাশাপাশি তার নিরাপত্তা সুনিশ্চিত করার দায়িত্ব পুলিশ প্রশাসনকে নিতে হবেন

অভয়ার ঘটনা পেরিয়ে গেছে চোদ্দ মাস হল। সেখান থেকে আজ পর্যন্ত কসবা থেকে উলুবেড়িয়ায় ঘটে যাওয়া প্রতিটি ঘটনার একই ছাপ স্পষ্ট। শাসক দলের প্রশ্রয়ে গজিয়ে ওঠা কচি নেতা থেকে বিভিন্ন দুর্নীতির সিন্ডিকেট – এদের হাতে কেউ নিরাপদ নয়। সিভিক থেকে হোমগার্ড এসব নিরাপত্তা রক্ষার দায়িত্বে যারা সেখানেও সেইসব ‘দামাল ছেলে’ দের সংখ্যাধিক্য, যারা রাজনৈতিক আনুগত্যের বিনিময়ে চাকরি পেয়েছে।

নাগরিক সমাজ যদি এখনই একজোট হয়ে এই সন্ত্রাসের বিরুদ্ধে না দাঁড়ায়, তাহলে আগামীকাল কার পালা আসবে তা কিন্তু কেউই আন্দাজ করতে পারবেন না।

The incident took place inside the Gynecology Antenatal Ward of Uluberia Medical College.

In the afternoon, a pregnant woman was admitted with abdominal pain. During her examination, a per vaginal check-up was required, but the patient was not cooperating properly, making the procedure difficult. Since her condition was completely stable, the attending doctor decided to defer the examination after giving preliminary treatment until the senior visiting surgeon arrived.

Shortly after, around 10 to 12 people, including the patient’s relatives and some local men, stormed into the ward and attacked the woman doctor on duty. Several among them claimed to be “senior police officers” and “local leaders.” The doctor was physically assaulted — her hand was twisted, she was slapped on the neck, and the attackers shouted horrifying threats: “If your mouth runs, our rods will run. We’ll show you where those rods can go” , “You won’t leave here alive.”

The hospital security guards, being locals themselves, failed or refused to intervene.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) stands firmly beside the assaulted doctor in every possible way. The doctor and her husband have already filed an FIR, leading to the arrest of two accused persons, one a traffic police home guard and the other a local ruling-party leader. The rest of the attackers are still “untraced.”

At first, there was no institutional FIR from the hospital. Our representative team has already reached the site, met with hospital doctors, and submitted deputations to both the hospital authorities (who have now lodged the institutional FIR) and the police administration. WBJDF has also conveyed a clear message of solidarity with the survivor.

A terrifying pattern has emerged across almost every hospital in the state — a climate of impunity under the shelter of the ruling party. A section of people, emboldened by political connections, now believe they can do anything without consequence. We have seen this before: quick arrests for the sake of optics, followed by quiet bail and business as usual. We fear the same cycle may repeat here.

WBJDF is providing legal and moral support to the survivor. At this moment, helping her recover from the trauma and ensuring her personal security are our top priorities. The police administration must take full responsibility for her safety.

It has been fourteen months since the Abhaya incident, yet from Kolkata’s Kasba to Uluberia, the pattern remains unchanged. The same fingerprints of political patronage are visible, from petty young leaders to corrupt syndicates. No one is safe in their hands. Even in hospital security, the same political recruits, home guards and civic volunteers, outnumber those with any real accountability.

If the civil society does not rise up now, united against this organized terror, it will only be a matter of time before anyone’s turn comes next.
