24 October 2025
Abhaya Mancha expresses its strongest and most urgent protest against a series of deeply disturbing incidents that reflect a grave erosion of public safety, institutional accountability, and respect for human dignity. We demand immediate and uncompromising action against the perpetrators of the following crimes:
- Assault on Nursing Personnel in Birbhum (22 October 2025)
We unequivocally condemn the violent attack on an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) at Mahammadbazar block, Birbhum district. Targeting a healthcare worker—especially one serving at the grassroots—is an attack on the entire public health infrastructure and a betrayal of the compassionate service they provide. We demand swift and stringent legal action against the assailant. The protection of frontline health workers must be treated as a non-negotiable priority. - Brutal Retaliation Against Doctor and Friend in Gaighata, North 24 Parganas We are outraged by the assault on a doctor and his friend who courageously intervened against eve-teasing directed at the doctor’s sister. This retaliatory violence underscores a chilling reality: those who stand up against gender-based harassment are themselves at risk. Such impunity for street-level crimes must end. We call on law enforcement to ensure the harshest punishment for the perpetrators and reaffirm that defending women’s dignity is a civic duty.
- Torture of a Teenager Inside SSKM Hospital (23 October 2025)
We are horrified by the reported torture of a teenage girl within the premises of SSKM Hospital, allegedly by a personnel affiliated with another facility. Hospitals are meant to be sanctuaries of care and safety. This heinous breach of trust is a moral and institutional failure, reminiscent of the R.G. Kar incident last year. We demand immediate arrest and prosecution of the accused. Additionally, we urge a statewide audit of hospital security protocols to prevent such atrocities in the future.
4. Torture of a Differently-Abled Girl in Dattapukur, North 24 Parganas
We strongly condemn the brutal torture of a differently-abled girl in Dattapukur. This act of cruelty demands urgent investigation and justice. No society can claim progress while its most vulnerable are subjected to such inhumanity.
These incidents—violence against a public servant, retaliatory assault against defenders of women’s rights, sexual violence within a medical institution, and abuse of a differently-abled individual—collectively indict the current state of law and order. We demand action, not assurances.

A delegation from Abhaya Mancha visited Dattapukur and Chandpara (Gaighata, North 24 Parganas) today to meet the victims and their families, and to stand in solidarity with their pursuit of justice.
We demand action, not assurances.
