A National Tragedy That Has Shaken Us All!
Today, our nation witnessed one of the most horrific aviation disasters in recent history. Air India Flight 171 (Boeing 787 series) crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, claiming the lives of 241 passengers and crew on board. Only one survivor has been reported.
Tragically, the aircraft crashed into the undergraduate hostel complex of BJ Medical College, directly impacting the canteen area where several MBBS students and healthcare workers’ family members were present. Multiple casualties have been reported among medical students, with many others injured. The full extent of the loss is still being assessed. Visuals emerging from the scene are disturbing and deeply distressing.
The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) extends its deepest condolences to the families of all those who have lost their lives in this unprecedented disaster. We stand in solidarity with every family affected, and with the entire medical fraternity in Gujarat and across India.
We acknowledge and appreciate the swift response of the Resident Doctors’ Associations (RDAs) of Gujarat-based medical colleges, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), and other healthcare organizations who have immediately organized blood donation camps and mobilized manpower to support overwhelmed hospitals.
This incident is not just a tragedy — it is a wake-up call. WBJDF strongly demands a transparent, impartial, and high-level investigation into the causes of this crash. Accountability must be established. It is essential to determine whether this was due to human error, technical failure, or systemic negligence. The safety of citizens and healthcare workers cannot be compromised.
The scale of this disaster is unparalleled. The grief is collective, and so must be the resolve to uncover the truth and prevent such occurrences in the future.
