Public memory is too short. Only a few months to three years ago there were anger, violence and demonising of the medical profession. The politicians of all hues painted the medical profession as the Shylock of the society. Cause of death in any set up was doctors’ negligence unless proved otherwise. Medical personnel were harassed, heckled, beaten, even excrement was poured over them. The draconian acts of consumer protection & clinical establishment were imposed. Numerous small to medium sized private setups were closed or truncated. The medical community was being preached by the judiciary that the public grievance is a part of job & you can not cease work. The very judiciary which closes shop in summer, winter, holidays is now hiding with its tail between legs in the Corona times.
About the political masters ; the less spoken the better. All steeped in corruption. They have systematically killed the small & medium health care setups both private & govt. Then they ushered the culture of big and all engulfing which gives them the leeway to manipulate.
The medical community was painted as the enemy of society by the left, ultra left, right & ultra right et al–the proverbial sacrificial lamb before public.
Local redressal of grievances became the law, like khaap panchayat. Medical professionals were taken to task for loss of life or complications.
How could one guarantee life when our own is not guaranteed! How could one practice medical science unless one knows the cure of death; this is the situation.
The woefully inadequate infrastructure of our hospitals are incapable of taking a mighty enemy as Corona. All health personnel will be sitting ducks. Leave aside prescribed protective gear & ventilators, we are short of masks, sanitizers & aprons. With inadequate armaments the medical community will be clapped to take on the might of Corona which the western nations with their fabled services are failing. The doctors, nurses & paramedical staff will be cannon fodder to corona.
Yet we wont back down from fighting with our meagre resources. The battle of Gallipolli begins, dear friends.
It wont be surprising ; if there is a calamity of magnum proportions. Then the politicians & officials will put the blame on medical professionals; as incompetent or negligent.
The very people who clapped one day, are now threatening doctors & nurses to move out of their rented apartments for fear of infection, while they themselves flock around shops to stack up stores for coming lock down.
Its a way of nature to come back full circle. The very profession which was painted as asuras in durga puja pandals will be fighting the nuclear might of corona with batons.
Ready to be cannon fodder or the sacrificial lamb.
