Why Must the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) Be Dissolved?
The WBMC, meant to uphold medical ethics, has become a hub for corruption, malpractice, and a dangerous medical mafia. Every right minded person should understand the need for its immediate dissolution is necessary:
1. Election Corruption and Political Influence
• WBMC elections in 2013, 2018, and 2022 were rigged, allowing political interests to dominate. This compromised council facilitates corruption and neglects its duty to regulate the medical profession impartially.
2. A Breeding Ground for the Medical Mafia
• The WBMC since the last rigged election in 2022 shelters many a medical mafias that intimidates and silences ethical practitioners. Hospitals and colleges have turned into places where threats and coercion are routine, all under number of the council’s members watch.
3. Linked to Heinous Crimes
• The WBMC’s failure to act against internal criminal activities contributed to the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College. The arrest of the ex-Principal by the CBI reveals a deep nexus between the WBMC and criminal elements. Several members of WBMC were seen at the scene of crime on the day which the Kolkata Police tried to shield in vain. The reality is now in open for all to see.
4. A Barrier to Reform
• The council obstructs healthcare reform by shielding malpractice and threatening those who seek justice. Its dismantling is essential to pave the way for a transparent, unbiased regulatory body.
